Mitcham Heritage Day 2018

Updated: Jun 12, 2019

Every year, a number of the outstanding heritage buildings and organisations in Mitcham come together to celebrate Mitcham Heritage Day, as part of Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers.

In 2018, The Canons House & Grounds team had a stand on the West Lawn of the Grounds and welcomed visitors to sign up to our newsletter, read about some of the history of the site and learn about the upcoming project. We also had children's games and a photo scavenger hunt.

We opened up the dovecote, likely built by the monks who lived on this site prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at intervals throughout the day and this proved to be the most exciting element of The Canons for most visitors.

The Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage group organise the overall programme of Mitcham Heritage Day. You can read more about their work here. They work hard to bring local people together to celebrate their heritage.

We had a wonderful day; the dovecote was such an adventure!! Absolutely fascinating thinking that we were standing on exactly the same place and walking the same paths as people 500 years ago.
