Over the Autumn term, The Canons House & Grounds and Mitcham Town Community Trust have been designing a set of lessons for Key Stage 2 around the history and heritage of The Canons House & Grounds and the greater Mitcham area. These bring in important education and curricular goals for this age, as well as exciting activities and trips for the students to learn in a different way to the classroom.
The first ten lessons were finished and trialed at the SHINE Saturday programme, run by Mitcham Town Community Trust. The participants really enjoy their mornings learning about history and historical research, and we had a fun visit to The Canons in October, even though it was raining. They debuted their work, including walking pamphlets, photography and drawings at the SHINE celebration in December, where children were awarded prizes for their enthusiastic work on this project.
We are currently developing the further 15 lessons over the Spring and Summer terms; these will be trialed at SHINE. When complete, they will be available to interested groups and schools; either delivered on site in the newly refurbished Canons heritage space or by teachers in their own spaces using our lesson plans.
